Academic Writing Unit

The ISAR Academic Writing Unit is an organization and educational center established within ISAR with the aim of instilling in its students the skill of academic/scientific writing ethics and critical reading—both of which hold significant importance in Turkish and global academia. In this regard, the ISAR Academic Writing Unit prioritizes one-on-one guidance to support the academic development of its students.

What Are the Activities of the ISAR Academic Writing Unit?
The ISAR Academic Writing Unit has six main responsibilities:

  1. Managing written assignments for social science and Islamic studies courses, as well as tracking students’ progress on these assignments.

  2. Reviewing and grading course-related essays and assignments, and providing students with appropriate feedback and guidance.

  3. Organizing, coordinating, and monitoring the ISAR Critical Reading and Academic Writing I-II courses.

  4. In addition to ISAR courses designated at the beginning of each term, the unit reviews and provides feedback—upon student request—on assignments (response & reflection papers), undergraduate theses, master's and doctoral dissertations, article drafts (proposals/writing samples), and symposium/presentation papers related to ISAR and non-ISAR courses. This feedback focuses on academic writing ethics, formatting rules required by academic language, and expression styles in Turkish and other languages.

  5. Creating translated or original materials on critical reading and academic writing methods when necessary. The unit also directs students to existing helpful resources on these topics.

  6. Tracking the writing process of students who will present at the ISAR Student Symposium and offering them feedback on their papers and presentations.
